Below you will find a listing of the Talent classes offered at Myra S. Barnes Intermediate School.
GRAPHIC ARTS
Our exciting Graphic Arts program offers a variety of outlets for students to create, design, explore, and participate in the arts. Students are introduced to various elements on how theatrical production, graphic design, photography and media arts work side by side with one another. During the program students work as graphic designers for the school to create logos, and projects for the community.
In eighth grade students utilize the talents, skills, and techniques they developed during the first two years to photograph and design the yearbook. Students also participate in various school performances as backstage crew members learning how to work the lights, sound, and scenery of a performance.
BAND
The Band Program at I.S. 24 is dedicated to the musical growth of our students. In establishing a positive and enjoyable environment, we hope to inspire our students to embrace a love for music and to develop an enthusiasm to make music well beyond Intermediate School.
Our Band Program includes Junior and Senior Band, as well as Jazz Band as an After School Activity. Sixth grade students who have completed two years of training on a band instrument in elementary school are programmed into Junior Band. Seventh graders are either placed in Junior Band or Senior Band. Eighth graders are programmed for Senior Band. Jazz Band is also an extra-curricular activity open to select student musicians. Pep Band is a small Concert Band ensemble that is used for special occasions and is made up of select seventh and eighth grade students.
The talent and hard work of our students is showcased in performances throughout the school year both at the school and in the community. The bands perform in both the Holiday and Spring Concerts, at assembly programs, and our Performing Arts production.

STREAM
In this hands-on STREAM class, students will engage in real world challenges designed to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for future success. From constructing earthquake-proof towers to programming robots and creating 3D designs, students will use creativity, collaboration, and innovation to overcome obstacles. All of these skills will culminate in their toughest task yet—becoming entrepreneurs. As eighth-grade students, they’ll take on the Barnes Shark Tank, pitching their innovative ideas in a competitive setting. Through each project, they'll develop the tools and mindsets needed to tackle complex problems, preparing them for the dynamic challenges of tomorrow's world.
DANCE
Our Dance talent is designed for the beginning, intermediate and advance level students alike who are interested in improving his/her movement skills. We will focus on a wide range of vocabulary, structure and techniques that encompass the art of Dance. Students will participate in school performances in order to showcase their talents at different functions throughout the year. After school activities in the I.S. 24 Dance Company are also available where the team performs at competitions in NY/NJ, school basketball games, and community events.
PERFORMING ARTS
The Performing Arts Program combines two talents: Vocal Music and Drama. The sixth and seventh grade Performing Arts classes concentrate on singing with acting skills peppered in. They are included in several performances, including the concerts, and special assemblies. Students in chorus have had many exciting activities!
Once in 8th grade, the students rehearse and perform the Spring Musical Production where all of the skills they have been working on are utilized. Students get to go through an audition process and are cast in a play. Students can also hold jobs such as Assistant Director and Stage Manager, and are exposed to a full musical theater experience.

VISUAL ARTS
Our newest talent is Visual Arts. Our visual arts program offers a variety of outlets for students to create in the arts. Students are introduced to art history, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, photography, and other artistic mediums.
All Visual Arts classes concentrate on their art making skills through exciting projects that will be displayed in the spring art show each year.
In eighth grade students utilize the talents, skills, and techniques they developed during the first two years and transform it into a production. Students will complete the program by painting scenery for the school events.

**Any student who is placed in Honors and selects Band, Performing Arts, Dance, Art or STREAM will have a three year course of study in that subject along with a World Language in Italian or Spanish.**
**Any non-honors class student will receive Talent classes over three years and will be able to experience a World Language for one year while with us.**
