23-24 Self- Sustaining After School Program

Self- Sustaining After School Program: SSASP Spring Session 

Fall 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are pleased to inform you that I.S. 24 is fortunate to be able to offer your child an opportunity to participate in our Self Sustaining After School Program (SSASP). In an effort to enrich your child’s middle school experience we are offering a variety of extra-curricular activities (see below). 

 

Each program will be held on Tuesday through Friday, from 2:20-3:50. The cost of each program is $160.00 for a seven (7) week session.. Please note some programs may have an additional supply fee.

 

Only Credit Cards using our online payment form will be accepted. No cash, money orders, or personal checks will be accepted.  No transportation will be provided for this special program.  Please complete the registration form online.  You can access your registration form online at www.barnes24.org application and payment are due by October 6, 2023. 

 

Also note that if a particular activity has low registration, we will be unable to sustain the activity. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Doyle in Room 315 or Mrs. O'connor in the gymnasium with any questions.

General policies: Registration fees are refundable minus the credit card fee only if a class is canceled.  Classes will be canceled in the event of insufficient enrollment.  Your child will be accepted to the program upon receipt of both the registration and fees.  Placement into a class goes according to availability. There will be no bus transportation available. Failure to pick up your child at dismissal of the program may lead to the removal from the program. After our program, students enrolled in the UAU program may attend the UAU program unitl 5 PM.

Tuesday

First Time Fencing: Mrs. Borzymowski and Mrs. Sela

En Garde! Come put your plastron and pommel on during an invigorating fencing match.  Learn how to lunge, glide, disengage, and demonstrate your deception skills.  This is an excellent activity for athletes looking for an individual sport that will enhance their upper body strength, coordination, and stamina. (Maximum of 24 students)

 

Intro to SFX Makeup: Mrs. Polizzi

Learn how to create special effects (SFX) makeup from a certified makeup artist ! In this introductory class students will get hands-on experience in designing and executing SFX makeup looks. Students will work with products such as liquid latex, scar wax, and cosmetic blood and learn a variety of skills from cosmetic bruising to 3D SFX looks.

please note, liquid latex will be utilized in the class. If a student has a known latex allergy, please notify Mrs. Polizzi

STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR OWN MICELLAR WATER & MAKEUP REMOVING WIPES/CLOTH.

Cricut Crafts: Ms. Legate

Are you ready to dive into a world of endless creativity? Welcome to the colorful and magical world of Cricut Design Space where imagination knows no bounds! You will learn how to use the design space software and be guided through the process of choosing the perfect fonts and images to create a one-of-a-kind project.

Wednesday;

Jazz Band: Mrs. Yuzuk 

Jazz Band is a program open to musicians who play the following instruments: drum set, bass guitar, jazz guitar, jazz keyboard, trombone, baritone, trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, and baritone saxophone. Musicians must have a minimum experience of two years playing their instrument. We will explore this genre by listening to the jazz masters, learning some improvisation skills, and by preparing fun charts.

 

STEM Warriors: Mrs. D. Amoroso

At STEM Warriors, we help students uncover the excitement and adventure in the world of science, technology, engineering and math. Students will experiment with rockets, dissections, coding, chemistry, and engineering, all the while having a blast - literally!  Students will learn many new STEM skills and develop a love of all thing's science! 

Chess Club: Mr. Levine

Students will learn how the pieces move, to play a chess game from start to finish, and to develop strategies. Students will be challenged to work together and play various games as a team. Not only do the children build confidence but they also interact in a competitive, but friendly atmosphere.

Creative Crafts: Mrs. Margolis

Students will be using their creativity, and  imagination to make gifts.  We will be creating 2-3 wreaths for the Holiday Season from start to finish! Each student will take home their creative crafts to proudly display and celebrate the seasons.

Thursday

Baking at Barnes: Miss Spano

Do you love desserts? Do you enjoy baking desserts? Or do you just enjoy eating desserts? Either way this is for you!! Students will learn the fundamentals and  basics of baking and cupcake and cookie decorating! Amazing finished products will be going home for the family to enjoy! (16 students maximum)

LEGO Robotics: Mr. LaPorta

Use LEGO® Bricks to build models and bring them to life while learning teamwork and communication skills. In this program, you will learn to program and build a robot and compete against other students. (Maximum of 24 students)

 

Track: Miss Amoroso

Track program will introduce runners to the various distances track runners compete in. Students will have fun and develop the ability, confidence and desire to be physically active for life. Students will learn dynamic warmups and participate in running/movement games.

 

Comfortable clothing, sneakers and water bottle required.

Friday

 

3D Printing: Mr. LaPorta

Explore the 3D printing process from beginning to end. We will learn how to design 3D models with Tinkercad software. Learn the parts of the 3D printer and print out designs. (15 students maximum)

 

Board Games/ Dungeons & Dragons: Ms. Pearce

Meet new students, hang out, play some of your favorite board games or play D&D.

 

Soccer Skills and Drills: Mr. Maccariello

 

Whether you are a newcomer to the sport or on a team, this program is designed to help young players develop athletically.  Learn the fundamentals of soccer in a relaxed environment with fun, interactive games and competitions. Students will engage in soccer skill training, speed training, ball handling, endurance training, and team building skills.
